Dachstein Mountain Station: “Energy Crystal” with “Stairway to Heaven”

04/04/2025

Mountain Station Generates Up to 80% of Required Energy Through Photovoltaic Cladding
In September 2023, work began in the Schladming-Dachstein region at 2,700 meters above sea level, at what is likely Austria’s highest-elevation construction site. The old mountain station was completely gutted down to its steel frame and rebuilt in just a matter of months. Photovoltaic cladding was installed on the east, west, and south sides of the building. A total of 338 modules were installed spanning 633 square meters, turning the building into the aptly named “Energy Crystal.” With an expected annual output of around 100,000 kWh, up to 80% of the energy required for the mountain station is expected to be self-generated.

New Dining: Restaurant and Bar with Outdoor Terrace and Dream Views
Inside and out, the new dining options at the Dachstein mountain station are real showstoppers. The restaurant seats around 230 guests and offers a 280-degree view of the imposing mountain landscape. A separate, partitionable buffet area with an open kitchen was created for sunrise breakfasts and sunset fondues. On the top floor of the station, there is a new bar where you can indulge in small snacks and refreshing drinks while gazing out at the majestic south faces of the Dachstein. An experience you can enjoy from the cozy indoor area or the outdoor terrace. Additionally, they have a space for seminars and events, which will likely be the highest event venue in Styria and Upper Austria.

New Attraction on the Dachstein: Climb Toward the Clouds on the “Dachstein Stairway to Heaven”
The Dachstein is already packed with spectacular attractions: one of them is the “Sky Walk” viewing platform, perched on a 250-meter vertical rock face near the mountain station. Add to that Austria’s highest suspension footbridge, the “Stairway to Nothingness,” and the Dachstein Ice Palace. The newest attraction is located on the outdoor terrace, right on the roof of the new mountain station, and is known as the “Dachstein Stairway to Heaven.” Yet another impressive lookout point that perfectly complements the existing offerings.
