The tour

The tour can be started from the Silberkarklamm/Fliegenpilz car park or from the Feistererhof hike starting point or at the Percht/Alte Mühle hike starting point car park.

The king's stage from Ramsau am Dachstein takes you into the wild and romantic landscape "Am Stein" and to wild waters. The Guttenberghaus is one of the highest shelters with overnight accommodation in the Ramsau area and at the same time a hiking hub for the Ramsau mountains with the landscape "Am Stein". Beautiful vantage point!

Turn-by-turn directions

Directions (starting from WA Feisterer):

The starting point for the hike is the car park below the Hotel Feisterer in Ramsau am Dachstein. This is where the steep ascent begins, which first leads along a wide access road through the forest to the rustic and inviting Lärchbodenalm (1 440 m). The hut is open daily from June to October and is an ideal hiking destination for families. A children's playground and a petting zoo will delight the children all around. Fresh organic milk from our own farm and the well-known Lärchboden cuts invite you to a cozy alpine snack. Then the stony forest path runs through mountain pine alleys up to the valley station of the Guttenberghaus material cable car. Now the hiking trail that leads you to the rocks of the "Fischermauer" begins. The trail now winds through the free, green slopes of the "Tiefkar", granting beautiful views down into the Ennstal and the rock faces of the Sinabell are getting closer and closer. Arriving at the Guttenberghaus, the panoramic terrace invites you to take a well-deserved rest and refreshment. The child-friendly hut is located at 2 147 m above sea level, making it the highest Alpine Club hut with overnight accommodation in Styria.

The hut was built in 1914 and is nestled between the rocky peaks of the Scheichenspitze and the Sinabell, on a green hill in front of it. Beautiful vantage point and important hiking hub! On the one hand there is the path to the Dachstein glacier, the crossing of the karstified high plateau in a northerly direction to the Krippenstein or the ascent to the Scheichenspitze and the Ramsau via ferrata. From here you move in high alpine terrain - appropriate behavior is a prerequisite for safe hiking. The local mountain of the Guttenberghaus is the Sinabell. The ascent to the summit takes a good hour and is also used as a descent option from the Austria via ferrata Sinabell.

Continue on the "King's stage"

On path no. 618, past Sinabell and Wasenspitze to the turnoff to path 619. The deep view of the small Höllgrabensee (Silberkarsee) resting in a rock basin and the magnificent nature with a sweeping view of the “Am Stein” landscape are attractive. A karst high plateau that stretches over 20 km² in the north and east of the Dachstein, where small rocky peaks, green hills, stone pine forests and deeply incised cirques form a wondrous landscape. Then comes the descent over the Stangalm, steep and stony in serpentines down to the Silberkarhütte, past the Siega via ferrata. The hut at 1,223 m offers hikers and climbers rich organic products from their own organic farm. The rest of the way is different again and entertaining. It goes through the romantic wild water gorge past the Schleier waterfall, over stairs and footbridges always downhill along the rushing stream. With the Hias via ferrata and the Rosina via ferrata there are 2 other demanding via ferratas right near the valley.

At the exit of the Silberkarklamm (clamp maintenance fee) you take the right path to the fly mushroom snack bar (1 040 m) and hike along forest path no. 7 to the Rössingstraße (car park Alte Mühle). Follow this to the marked Angerer junction, turn right onto Panoramaweg No. 1 and walk the last 20 minutes slightly uphill to the parking lot at the Feisterer hiking starting point.

Equipment

High-alpine hike. Due to the direct sunlight, it is recommended to start the tour early in the morning.

Changes in weather patterns, quick falls in temperature, thunderstorms, wind, fog and snow are some of the dangers that can be encountered on a hiking tour. Hosts of alpine huts and mountain refuges have a lot of experience in the mountains and can give good advice about weather and the trails. Poor equipment, overestimation of one's own capabilities, carelessness, poor personal constitution and/or wrong judgement  can lead to critical situations. In case of thunderstorms: avoid summits, ridges and steel ropes.

GPS data and orienteering

Available GPS data - just like hiking maps - is only a guidance for orientation and can never depict a trail exactly with all its details. Especially at dangerous spots it is essential to judge on site how to proceed.

In an emergency please call:

  • 140 - for Alpine emergencies (all over Austria)
  • 112 - European GSM emergency number

A well-packed backpack is helpful and especially when touring Alpine terrain a tuque, gloves, a windproof jacket and pants are standard equipment. Good, waterproof shoes, sun glasses, sun cream and sufficient beverages are essential too. Torch light, a map of the area, knie and a small first-aid kit should also be in the backpack.
