The tour

The managed Michaelerberghaus is not only the destination of this tour, but also a popular destination. The groomed slope from the starting point is open for you every day. Monday, Wednesday and Friday it is also selectively illuminated from 6:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. (so be sure to bring a headlamp). If you still have power in your calves at the finish, you can continue the tour during the day up the 1,916 m high Kochofen (difficult).

On Tuesday the Michaelerberghaus is closed.

Turn-by-turn directions

The tour starts approx. 100 metres east of Gröbming station in Bahnhofstraße. Between the large hall and a small housing estate you start southwards up a small hill. There you cross the road and after a short flat meadow you climb a steep slope diagonally to the right (southwest). At about the vlg. Ebenschwaiger (approx. 830 m above sea level), sometimes even below, the meadows along a ski slope that was closed down years ago up to the Michaelerberghaus (1,203 m) are groomed by the landlord on a strip about 10 metres wide. However, there is also enough space for a descent in the unprepared snow.

Getting there

Equipment

In winter, caution is advised even on supposedly easy tours. The ground can be slightly icy in shady places, and there may be a risk of avalanches on slopes. Mountain sports are therefore - even more so in winter - above all subject to personal responsibility. Before every ski tour or snowshoe hike, it is essential to consult the current avalanche report - available at www.lawine.at.

Tourism associations or avalanche warning services do not assume any liability based on the information provided.

  • Ski touring equipment consisting of skis / splitboard, skins and sticks
  • Avalanche transceiver (LVS), shovel and probe
  • Camisole & hood to change
  • Sunglasses for the ascent, ski goggles & helmet for the descent
  • Warm gloves, possibly light gloves for the ascent
  • Thermos with a warm drink, e.g. tea and granola bars
  • Headlamp
