The Art Of The Duo
Cultur Centrum Wolkenstein
Heinrich von Kalnein (D) - flute, alto flute
Sophie Min (AUS) - Grand Piano
Karolina Strassmayer (A) - alto saxophone
David Friedman (USA) - vibraphone
There will be two duos on this very special evening, whose protagonists come from four different directions. The young Korean pianist Sophie Min, who has been living in Brisbane, Australia, for over 10 years and is one of the most exciting and promising artists of her generation, has come the furthest. Together with the German saxophonist/flutist and university lecturer Heinrich von Kalnein, who has lived in Graz for decades, she presented their joint duo production “Intertwined Trees” in January 2024, which was highly praised by critics for its compositional and interpretative brilliance: “The breathtakingly organic interplay allows only one conclusion: two absolute professionals were at work here, but they also understood how to feel and realize the magic of the moment. ... A musical gem.”
Austrian-born saxophonist Karolina Strassmayer was the first female member of the renowned WDR Big Band in Cologne after spending several years in New York. For many years, however, she has also been touring as a virtuoso and sensitive soloist, including with the living “legend” of the vibraphone David Friedman. Friedman has worked with the “Who's Who” of jazz, such as Horace Silver, Chet Baker and Wayne Shorter, as well as with the greats of the classical world, such as Leonhard Bernstein.
You can look forward to two highly exciting musical sets and also to all four participants making music together.
