Ski Tour around Gjaidstein

Starting at the mountain station, on this tour you cross the glacier to the Gjaidalm and from there climb up to the Oberfeld. Between Niederem and Hohem Rumpler you go south-west to the Mitterstein chairlift valley station and back to the Hunerkogel. Attention, there are only a few pole markings, good sense of direction and GPS necessary. Beware of crevasses and sinkholes.
Attention: The lifts on the Dachstein Glacier are no longer in operation. Therefore, all altitude metres have to be mastered under your own power. GPS track has been adapted.
Ascent and descent: follow Austria’s National Ski to the Gjaidalm. From there, ascent to Oberfeld - along the eastern slopes of the mountain range Taubenkogel - Niederer and Hoher Gjaidstein (pole marking) to the bottom station of the Mitterstein chairlift, and onwards to Hunerkogel. From Oberfeld on the Niederer and Hoher Rumpler, southwards to the Gjaidsteingrube (pit) and from there to the Mitterstein, the chairlift and the Hunerkogel (Dachstein Gondola Mountain Station). Beware of weather conditions, fog and poor visibility.
From the west:
Tauern Autobahn (A 10) to Knoten Ennstal - turnoff direction Graz/Schladming - stay on the Ennstal-Bundesstraße (B320) for approx. 20 km until Schladming - take the turnoff for Ramsau.
From the north:
Pyhrn Autobahn (A 9) direction Liezen - take the Ennstal-Bundesstraße (B320) to Schladming - turnoff Ramsau.
Take the 960 bus to the Dachstein/Türlwandhütte stop.

- Always behave in a risk-aware manner and react to danger signs!
- Observe existing regulations, e.g. hunting and wildlife protection areas, reforestation or young growth areas.
- You should always have a fully charged mobile phone with you. Have you also saved the emergency numbers? Mountain rescue: 140. If you have no signal, take out the SIM card and dial 112.
- Avalanche beacon, probe and shovel are essential in open terrain for this tour glacier equpiment is recommended.
- Ski touring equipment consisting of skis/splitboard, skins, poles and possibly crampons.
- Food, warm drinks, spare clothing and a first aid kit.
- Choose your clothing according to the onion layer principle.
- Maps and/or tour descriptions. GPX tracks on your mobile phone or GPS device are also helpful.
