Modern & Contemporary Dance

[ku:L] Öblarn

Both dance styles – Modern Dance and Contemporary Dance – are closely related and emerged as a rebellion against the rigid structures of classical ballet in the 20th century. They emphasize the importance of creativity, emotion, and individuality in dance.

Modern Dance: At its core, it focuses on the expression of emotions and liberation from traditional, formal movement patterns. In Germany, the American "Modern Dance" is also referred to as "Expressionist Dance."

Contemporary Dance: A fusion of Modern Dance, Jazz, Ballet, and other dance styles such as Street Dance, Afro, and Tap Dance. The movements are characterized by powerful, dynamic, flowing, and relaxed movements in space and on the floor (Floorwork). Dancers perform barefoot to feel the connection to the ground.

The movements originate from the center of the body and flow outward; there is an emphasis on maximum freedom of movement with minimal muscle tension. Influential figures and pioneers of Modern and Contemporary Dance include Isadora Duncan and Martha Graham, who you may already be familiar with.
